Scotch Whisky Basics
Distilled in Scotland from water and malted barley.
Other countries make a malted barley whiskey but can not be called Scotch.
Matured in casks which loose 0.5 to 2.0% in volume – angel's share
Bottles usually at 40 – 46% alcohol.
Types of Scotch according to SWA:
Single malt whisky – one whisky from one distillery from 100% malted barley
Single grain whisky – one whisky from one distillery form one grain or a mixture of grains, commonly up to 20% malted barley and 80% other grains
Vatted or blended malt whisky – traditional blended Scotch whisky, consisting only of single malt whiskies which may come from more than one distillery
Blended grain whisky – made of a mixture of grain whiskies from more than one distillery
Blended Scotch Whisky – is a blend of whiskies, commonly made of 20-40% single malt plus 60-80% grain whisky
Most people just thing of Scotch as single malt or blended.
